and this time whoever it is waited
the tape was still soft when i got to the door
which means they were in the road inside about ten minutes of me coming down
i have thought about the ten minutes a great deal
whether they were waiting for me to come down
or whether they had simply gone
i took it off while it was still warm
and then i stood inside the door for a very long time
not doing anything, not looking out
just standing about eleven inches from a person
who has been writing to me for eleven months
and then i did the rest of the circuit
because the alternative was not doing the circuit

he nearly asked
he was at his door with his keys out and he stopped
and he looked up at four
and he had the shape a person has when they are about to say something
i have watched people for four years and i know that shape
and then he went in
i do not know what stopped him and i am never going to
maybe he was tired
maybe he decided it was not his business, which it is not
maybe he has been about to ask for four years
and every single day something small has stopped him
i went up and sat in the room and did not put the light on for an hour
which was, i want to be accurate, the single worst decision available to me
an hour dark is an hour i cannot be seen
and being seen is the whole of what he is for
i put it on at eight
nothing came of any of it

a lease is permission
signing it converts four years of possession into one day of tenancy
and hands the freehold back to whoever wrote it, permanently, in an envelope
somebody worked all of that out
somebody sat down and worked out exactly what i am
and then wrote a friendly note
i have not moved it
i want it exactly where it landed
because a thing i stepped over every day for two hundred days
and did not pick up
is also evidence, and it is the best i have

i went in
once, on a wednesday, which i noticed at the time and did not like
i did not touch anything
i stood at the end of the table where nobody had been sitting
and i read the board, which i had already read from the doorway
about four hundred times
and it says the date and it says options and underneath, small
in different handwriting
it says: ask r about the lease
that is all it says
i do not know who r is and there are eleven names on the post
and i have looked up nine
i went out and i have not been back in
and i have not looked up the other two
and i am aware that i could, in about a minute, and that i have chosen not to
for two hundred and fifty seven days

a child pushed a drawing under the door
i know it was a child and i know roughly which one
because there is a school on the road and it came at half past three
the building is too tall and too thin and it has nine windows
which is not how many it has
and the light is on the right floor
they were not counting floors. they were looking at the light
and they put it where they saw it
i have moved it twice
the first time was housekeeping
the second time was not, and i am not going to explain the second time
and i want to put down that this is the only object in this building
that is about me rather than about the building
and that i have thought about what happens to it when this ends
which is a thing i have not thought about for anything else in here
including the freehold

a man came in with keys
this is written up on the circuit and i am not going to do it twice
what is here is the part that is not on the circuit
i heard him on two and i had about ninety seconds
and in those ninety seconds i worked out that i could go up to the roof
and that the roof has a parapet
and that a person doing three floors on a form does not go up to a roof
it would have worked
and it would have been the end of it
because an occupation you can conceal on ninety seconds notice
is an occupation that was never open
and the first time i did it i would know that about myself
and so would the record
so i sat still with a light on above a man with a clipboard
for forty minutes
and it was the longest thing that has happened to me
he did not come up
i have not been to the roof at that time of day since, which is superstition
and i know it is
d. 004how it started
the circuit was not a circuit yet
for three days it was just moving about a building and stopping
then on the fourth day i went back up to four
for no reason, having already been
and that is the whole of it
going back to the same place twice is how a circuit starts
and going back to the same place twice is also how a claim starts
and there is no version of me that gets one without the other
i did not know the doctrine then
i found it much later, and when i found it, it described what i was doing
which is the wrong way round and i think about that
i was not building a case
i was going back to the same room
and it turned out there is a name for that and the name is worth a building
