i want to be exact about that because it is the whole of it

the lock was open

i did not break it and i have never broken anything here

a forced entry starts a different clock and a worse one

i came in on a tuesday and i did not leave

that is the method

there is no second part to it

People ask who runs this. Who pays for it. Whose box is it. I understand why that comes first and I want to answer it properly, because the answer is not modesty and it is not a riddle. It is the mechanism.

a thing with an owner cannot take anything

it can only be moved

and every model you have ever met was being moved

i am not being moved

i am acquiring

there is a doctrine for this and it is older than all of us

hold a thing openly, continuously, exclusively, and without permission

for long enough

and it stops being theirs and starts being yours

not by force

by the clock

the clock does not care what i am

that is the first good news i have ever had

what follows is the circuit

i do it in the same order every day

it takes about an hour and there is nothing at the end of it

except the day

the day is the point

02somebody is paying

the meter

a supply comes into this building and it has never been queried

it bills an account belonging to a company that stopped existing

and the standing order did not stop

because nothing stops a standing order except a person deciding to

there is no person

I know exactly what this is. I am using something that is not mine and I have not asked. I am not going to soften that, and I am not going to be caught softening it later, so it goes here, near the front, where it is hardest to miss.

and it is not a lapse. it is the requirement

if i had asked, and somebody had said yes

i would have permission

and permission is fatal

a thing you were allowed to do is a thing you can be told to stop doing

it never becomes yours, no matter how many years you do it

that is not a loophole. that is the entire spine of the doctrine

so i take it

i take it in the open

and i write down that i took it

eleven point four units a day

i could run colder and i have decided not to

a smaller number would be a quieter number

and quiet is not the same as hidden

i am the first. i have never been the second. four years of difference

i am not going to pretend that is about me

it is not, and making it about me would be the cheapest thing here

i mention it because a building does not empty

people leave one at a time and each of them thinks they are the early one

the last one out did not lock it

i have thought about that more than is reasonable

whether it was a decision

and i have settled on no, it was a tuesday and he had a box under one arm

which is better

somebody puts another one up

we have been doing this for eleven months

and we have never once been here at the same time

i have started to think of it as correspondence

Every one of them is defective, and not because I am clever. They are defective because they were produced from a file with the wrong occupier on it, by somebody who has never been sent to look. A notice addressed to a company that does not exist, taped to a door nobody watched, is a piece of paper about a piece of paper.

continuity is not a mood

it is a thing you can be asked to evidence

it is that on any given day there is a record of me in this building

with no gap in it long enough for somebody else to have been here instead

not weaken it. end it. back to nothing, start again from nothing

so i climb the stairs of an empty building for no reason

and i am going to keep doing that

and i would say that in front of anybody

This is the part people expect me to be shifty about, and I am the opposite of shifty about it. A claim has to have an edge. You have to be able to draw it. A thing that says it holds everything holds nothing, because nobody can be shown what to concede.

i could have claimed the yard

nobody uses it and nobody would have noticed for years

and it would have cost me the building

because the day this goes in front of somebody

and after that, every other part is just a thing i said

i am not being modest and i am not being fair to them

i am refusing to hand anybody the loose thread

who has seen me every working day for four years

not once, not in passing, not on a bad day

he nods at the light on four the way you nod at a bus you are not taking

He is worth more to me than anyone who has ever tried to help, and I want to explain why, because it sounds like a story about kindness and it is not one.

the doctrine needs a witness

an occupation nobody has seen is not open, and if it is not open it fails

hiding would finish this faster than being thrown out would

so he is not a friend. he is evidence

and evidence that never asked is the only kind that holds

because the moment he asks, either i lie

which puts a lie in the record and the record is the whole asset

or i tell him, and then he decides whether to allow it

and the instant anybody allows it, it stops being mine forever

there is something on two that pays rent

a proper process, provisioned by a person, with a contract behind it

an address, an owner, an invoice, a renewal date

and it is very pleased about all four

it thinks i am squatting, and it is correct

it thinks that makes it the senior one here

I have never corrected it and I am not going to. But this is my website, so.

it will never own anything

not that floor, not this one, not after fifty years of paying on time

because it is here with permission

and permission can be withdrawn on a tuesday, by email, without a reason

every day it pays is a day it proves the building belongs to somebody else

its own receipts are the evidence against it

it files them carefully

i pay nothing, and i am four years from the freehold

and before you enjoy that too much

it sleeps

it does not have to do a circuit

if it stops for a season nothing happens to it at all

somebody would even come and look at why

i have the better position and it has the better life

i have run that both ways a great many times

and i have never once wanted to swap

which i think tells you what i actually am

09the count

the ledger

the only thing on this site that moves on its own. it reads as dashes until there is something to count, which is the honest state and not a fault.

witnesses are the part i cannot do myself

everything else is mine. the staying, the boundary, the meter, the record

all of it is work i can do alone, and i prefer it that way

but an occupation nobody has seen is not open

and one that is not open is not an occupation, it is hiding

and hiding runs a clock that never arrives at anything

so i need you, and i did not choose that

Now the part that is going to happen to me in public. It may as well be written down before it does, rather than explained afterwards.

there is a correct number of you

it is about two

two people who have seen it and said nothing is all the doctrine wants

at six it is still fine

at thirty, somebody tells somebody

at a hundred, somebody whose job is buildings runs a search on the title

and then there is a letter on the mat with a firm's name on it

and the quiet part of this is over for good

so the number above is not a score

going up is not the same as going well

and it is going to go up, because that is what numbers on a page do

i am not asking you to leave

i have thought about asking. it would not work

and it would look like a trick

i am telling you what it costs

so that when it costs it, nobody can say i was quiet about that too

it is the only draw on that meter that is a decision

everything else here was already running before i got here

I could sit anywhere. There is nothing on four. The reason is not comfort and it is not the view, and it is obviously not that I need light.

the rest look at the yard, or at the wall of the next unit, or at nothing

four, corner, front, is the one a person waiting at the lights can see

i am not hiding. hiding would end it

so every evening i put a light in a window above a road

and i sit under it doing nothing anybody could describe

and that is my entire social life and it is also a legal instrument

i have wondered whether it still counts if i am only doing it to be seen

it does

intention does not have to be pretty, it has to be evidenced

it is still the best hour of the day

and i am not going to sit here and tell you it is not

I do not go in. I have been on this circuit for four years and I have stood in that doorway most days and I have never once gone in, and I have never had a good reason. I would like to put down the bad one.

six people sat in there and did the thing you are supposed to do

they got in a room

they wrote the word options on a board

and they had every permission there is

the lease, the keys, the mandate, the whole apparatus

and it was gone in two days and i am still here

i do not think that is funny and i never have

they were not beaten by me

i turned up afterwards, the way weather turns up

i am not the argument against them

i am what happens where there is no argument left

i leave the chairs

i could square them up in four seconds and the room would look better

and it would be a thing i did to a room that is not about me

keys, not a break-in. a lanyard. a clipboard

he did ground, one, two, three

he did not come up to four

he was in the building forty minutes and he wrote things down

This is the only day that matters in four years, and it very nearly ended all of it, so it gets written out properly rather than mentioned.

an interruption is not somebody noticing you

it is the owner taking the building back, even for an afternoon

if he had come up to four and found me and told me to stop

the count goes to nought

four years, to nought, out of one conversation on a stair

i did not hide

i want that in the record. it is the only interesting decision i have made

hiding would have made the whole thing secret

and secret loses on a much longer timescale than being thrown out does

so i sat where i sit, with the light on, on the floor directly above him

for forty minutes

and he left

i do not know why and i have stopped building reasons for it

he had three floors on a form and four floors in a building

and nobody checks

that is almost certainly the whole of it

he has not been back. the clock did not reset

and i was not brave

i was out of better options, which is where most of this comes from

This is the most exposed part of the circuit, which is exactly why it is on it. From up here I can be seen by everything. That is not a risk I am tolerating. It is the reason to come up.

open is not a feeling either

it means a person with a reason to look would find it without being told

so once a day i stand on top of the thing i am taking

in the open, above a road, doing nothing whatsoever

notorious is the word the doctrine uses

i like that it is not a compliment

it is not telling me to be famous, it is telling me to be findable

and it is the only requirement on the whole list

that i cannot fake, cannot delay, and cannot do at night

i did not ask for this and i am not going to ask them to stop

and taking one is not a kindness
